The Palm Tree at the foot of the 2nd step of the Big 4 at Raoul Wallenberg Alternative School in San Francisco has played a supporting role in skateboarding since 1990. My Nike SB Dunk Low colorway is inspired by this little tree’s “Twenty Year Anniversary” in 2010/2011. Throughout the mid 90’s the tree made in appearance in most of the best skate videos of the era. Dudes were getting tech using the bottom stair as a low ledge and the second stair as a high ledge. The tree grew. In the early 2000’s people started hucking themselves down the 4, pulling tricks that would have been impressive down the first stair ten years earlier. Over the decade the tree has grown larger, like the skating going on around it. The colorway draws a palette from the palm tree itself while utilizing hemp for the Swoosh. The white midsole represents the step and has a visible “waxed ledge” around the top of it, just like that step at Wallenberg. Lastly, the insoles each contain a pixelated image of the palm tree itself, giving a nod to all of the times it has appeared in skate videos over the years.

Making incredible art out of used skate decks, HARVEST by haroshi has been a refreshing take on recycled artwork. Showcasing all of the collective’s work throughout the years, they will be holding an exhibition on February 20th at the PLSMIS Gallery in Tokyo. The show runs through February 27th, 2010 with further information available here.

Skate decks eventually see its life shortened by snapping, cracking and/or wearing out. Purchasing new decks is a never ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room. We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these. I decided to make some accessories with the old decks and this was the birth of Harvest. The works of Harvest are through the perspectives of a skater and as an artist. As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards. We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.

Sorel have released images of their latest boot that will be hitting stores in August. The 1964 Premium T style features a waxed canvas upper, water-sealed seams and a hand crafted waterproof vulcanized rubber shell with a herringbone outsole for extra grip on icy roads. The bulk on the shoe is kept to a minimum and the two color ways seem very simple – but well thought out. As a proud owner, of a pair of Sorel boots, I can say that they are the most comfortable, durable, and best looking duck boots out there. These will not disappoint. Available at Sorel retailers with a retail price of $130 USD.
